It is a curious fact that, if you say

Let them eat cake!

at an international gathering, the French-speaking people will have no idea what you are talking about. Even if you say it in French.

Well, one could argue that cake and brioche are significantly different.

Suppose you joke about bagel-eating policemen, instead of donut. It wouldn't really sound as funny...
